HERITAGE DAYS, CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA
Plans are progressing for Heritage Days, Saturday, April 12th,
and Sunday, April 13th in Connersville, Indiana.. Connersville Parks and
Recreation, Historic Connersville, Inc., and the Fayette County Cemetery
Commission are working together to make this a memorable weekend for those
interested in Fayette County's history. Many of Fayette County's pioneers were
originally from South Carolina, particularly a large settlement from Abbeville.
GENEALOGY: Those who are interested in sharing genealogical information are
invited to set up a display in the Miller Building at Roberts Park on Saturday
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There is no charge to
those participating, and tables for displays will be provided.
The Indiana Room at the Fayette County Public Library will be open from 9 a.m.
to 5 p. m. for those wishing to do research there. Fayette County Historian
Paulette Hayes will be on hand to instruct visitors to the festival on making
use of the vast amount of information available at the library.
PIONEER CEMETERY TOUR/ HEADSTONE RESTORATION DEMONSTRATION: Guided tours of
Nulltown Cemetery will begin at 9:30 and 1:30 on Saturday only, beginning at the
Miller Center. This cemetery has been undergoing cleaning and restoration.
Cemetery Supervisor Randy Morehead, restorationist John Walters, and Cemetery
Board President Darryll Morehead will be among those demonstrating various
phases of cleaning and repair.
HISTORIC TOUR: A true highlight of the festival will be a tour of historic
landmarks of Fayette County. Tour guides, Mardee and John Blommel, will showcase
sites, including a stop midway at the City Cemetery where Pat Summan will offer
a presentation on markers and their symbolism and other items of interest. This
tour will start at the Miller Center on Saturday at 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p. m.
The Saturday tours will also include guided tours of Canal House and Elmhurst.
Sunday tours begin at 9 a. m. and noon, and will not include the tour of
Elmhurst.
CEMETERY REDEDICATION: In 2002, restoration began on the Capt. William Russell
Memorial Cemetery, after it was discovered that the cemetery had been bulldozed
into a ditch during the early 1970's. Wm. Russell was born in 1785 and died in
1878. The rededication of the cemetery, honoring Capt. Russell and other
pioneers who rest in there, will take place at 3 p. m., with the Fayette County
Honor Guard providing Military Rites. Those attending this ceremony should meet
at the Miller Center parking lot at 2:15 to caravan to the site on State Road
44, east of Glenwood.
In addition to the planned activities, Canal House and the Museum (5th & Vine)
will be open to the public (both days), as will Elmhurst (Saturday only). Event
planners are hoping for a good turnout and hope the community and visitors from
outside Fayette County will take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate
Fayette County's rich heritage.
